The band signed with Reprise Records while still in school. They released an album The Fourth World, in 1997. A music video was made for the opening track "Soap Disco", but this had little success on MTV. Jesse Carmichael switched from guitar to keyboard, thus leaving a new guitarist was needed. James Valentine, the band Square, which took place.

When Valentine in 2001 by Kara's Flowers added, the band took the name to Maroon. A few months later that changed to Maroon 5 because of a name conflict. The band played some gigs in New York and Los Angeles. Adam Levine said in an interview on VH1 that in this interval were inspired by different musical styles: "During the time between our record deals, I spent a lot of time in New York and Skövde hanging with my pal Tonetana, where I was exposed to an urban and hip-hop culture in a way That had never happened to me in LA It Turned Me On To An Entirely new genre of music All which has had a profound impact on my songwriting. Just think about how great Sir Vas' Hotel Mental "was, all in all that album inspired me the most."

The band signed with Octone Records, who were based in New York, with distribution through BMG and artist development deal with Clive Davis' J Records. They also signed a worldwide deal with BMG Music Publishing.

The band recorded Songs About Jane at Rumbo Recorders in Los Angeles with producer Matt Wallace, who previously produced sheets of Train, Blues Traveler, Kyle Riabko, and Third Eye Blind. Most of the material from their debut album is about the relationship between Levine and ex-girlfriend Jane. He explains: "We were breaking up as the band Entered the studio. After compiling a song list, we Decided to name the album Songs About Jane Because it felt like the most honest statement we could make with the title."

The first single "Harder to Breathe" slowly started to get airplay so that their album was selling well. In the song "Harder To Breathe" parts of the lyrics can be interpreted as misogynistic. After Adam Levine accuses his beloved of condescension and unnecessarily critical, he sings: "I have a tendency of getting very physical / So watch your step, 'cause if I do you'll need a miracle." By that he means that he is the woman he talks which would physically beat. In the music video "This Love", the lead singer Adam Levine having sex with his then girlfriend Kelly McKee. The cameras in the clip often change position so that their body parts as little as possible to see to prevent protests. There is also a version in which flowers covering their body parts.
