 Akon was born on 30th April in the year 1973 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. His birth name was Aliaune Damala Dakha Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam. His father was a well-known percussionist and jazz artiste. His name was Mor Thiam. Akon usually uses the shorter name Aliaune Thiam, but his fans like to call him simply Akon. As he was born in a family of music lovers and his father being a renowned musician, it helped him to choose his career in music and to achieve success in the industry. He is at present one of the most sought after singers of the 21st century.

He was brought up in Senegal till his family came back to US and got established in New Jersey. It was when he was seven years of age. There, for the first time he discovered hip-hop while he was still enrolled in Snyder High School. Akon was not an ideal student though. He violated all the rules of the school and sold arms, bullet as well as test questions for each test for which he was rusticated from the school. Later he joined Bayonne High School. There he became popular because of his fights and also jailed for charges in distribution of drugs as well as armed robbery. While in jail, he utilized his time writing songs.

Once released from jail, he started recording tracks in a home studio. The tapes went to SRC/Universal which in due course released his debut music album LP and "Trouble" in June of the year 2004. It was an instant hit and paved his way to international stardom. The success of the song "Locked Up," based on his experience in jail for 3 years made him a star and preferred collaborator. The song hit the Top Ten Billboard Hot 100 list and he got a Sixshot Award for Best Single in 2004 as well. He is well known for his reggae music too. "Ghetto" is one of his best songs. The music video "Trouble” was a result of the struggles he underwent in his life. Akon’s popularity arose after he had appeared on Young Jeezy’s song “Soul Survivor" in 2005, which was featured in the album "Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101”. The song was among the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 list. His second album “Konvicted” got released in 2006 in the month of November. Soon after its release Akon achieved more name and fame as two of the album's singles, "I Wanna Love You" and "Smack That," reached the top regions of the Billboard charts. “I Wanna Love You" was featured and collaborated with Snoop Dogg. This particular song and its music video were in the top of the U.S. charts for two consecutive weeks.

His solo efforts such “Don't Matter" is enough to prove that he is a star and can reign at the No.1 position. Akon was a nominee at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for the song "Smack That" but unfortunately he could not win. He lost to collaboration "My Love." The singer is also known for his group effort with Gwen Stefani for the hit song "The Sweet Escape." During the first half of year 2007, he participated in Gwen's Sweet Escape Tour before touring as a single. During his tour in a concert in Tobago he was criticized for a racy dance with a juvenile girl. He did not know the age of the girl but still took the blame himself. The song "Sorry, Blame It on Me," evolved out of this incident. It was released in August, 2007. His third and the latest music album was Freedom and it was released in 2008. The videos of this music album are become very popular in a short time. The instrumental versions (especially piano and guitar Versions) of his music albums are again very popular as well.

On 3rd June of 2007, at a stage performance at radio station WSPK's KFEST in New York a boy of 15 years of age threw something towards Akon. After finding out who the boy was, he threw him into the crowd from the stage. The Fishkill police charged Akon for endangering the life of a minor but a December 3 ruled acquitted Akon from his guilt. All things said and done the Akon's magic is reaching new heights. He is planning to do a movie titled “Illegal Alien” where he is planning to portray the various events and incidents of his life.
